IFMIF-DONES is an accelerator driven neutron source to produce an intense neutron flux with an energy spectrum similar to the one observed in the D+T fusion reaction, thus featuring fast neutrons in the few MeV to 14 MeV energy range. Such a neutron source is needed to irradiate and qualify structural and functional materials (steel, W, different alloys) to be used in DEMO and future fusion reactors in harsh irradiation conditions. It will be also used to study and validate different tritium breeding technologies. The neutrons in DONES will be produced in D + Li reactions with a liquid jet of Li being used as the target. IFMIF-DONES will include several facilites for complementary experiments using neutron beams in the areas of nuclear physics, neutron imaging, medicine and industrial applications, making it a truly interdisciplinary neutron laboratory. The construction of IFMIF-DONES has started near Granada, Spain and is planned for the next 8 years.
Detailed information about the present status of DONES can be found on the IFMIF-DONES website
